Ultrasound without the stress of a clinic visit.

For many people with disability, getting to an imaging clinic can be the hardest part of the scan. Transport, waiting rooms, unfamiliar environments, transfers, sensory overwhelm, and positioning needs can all make a routine ultrasound feel difficult.

Modia Health brings mobile ultrasound to homes, supported accommodation, aged care settings, and care environments across Brisbane.

Built around the person, not the clinic.

Our appointments are planned around comfort, dignity, and cooperation. We take the time to explain what is happening, reduce unnecessary stimulation, and work with the people who know the participant best.

Sensory-friendly approach

Quiet, clear communication with time to pause, reset, or adjust.

Support people welcome

Family members, carers, and support workers can stay involved during the appointment.

Mobility-aware setup

We work around wheelchairs, beds, hoists, mobility aids, and complex positioning needs where clinically suitable.

Respectful care

Privacy, consent, and comfort are considered throughout the scan.

How mobile ultrasound works.

A practical referral-to-report process, with access needs handled before the appointment.

  1. 01

    Send us the referral.

We accept referrals from healthcare professionals and can help support coordinators, carers, and families understand the booking process.

  2. 02

    Tell us about access needs.

Let us know about mobility, sensory, communication, positioning, timing, or support requirements before the appointment.

  3. 03

    We come to the participant.

A qualified mobile sonographer attends with portable ultrasound equipment and sets up in the most suitable available space.

  4. 04

    Results go to the referrer.

The ultrasound report is sent to the referring GP, specialist, or care team so follow-up can happen quickly.

Clear billing before we visit.

Most Medicare-eligible ultrasound examinations can be bulk-billed when referral and Medicare requirements are met. A mobile travel or call-out fee may apply.

Because diagnostic imaging is usually part of the health system, NDIS funding may not cover the scan itself. If you are self-managed or plan-managed, we can discuss invoices, travel fees, and billing options clearly before the appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Search for anything about our mobile healthcare services to find the answers you need.

For Referring Health Practitioners

Q: Do I need a referral for mobile ultrasound?
A: Yes. Diagnostic ultrasound requires a referral from a GP, specialist, nurse practitioner, or other eligible referrer. We can't book the scan without it.
Q: Is the scan covered by Medicare or NDIS?
A: Many Medicare-eligible ultrasounds can be bulk-billed when referral requirements are met. A mobile travel or call-out fee may apply.

Diagnostic imaging is generally part of the health system rather than the NDIS, so NDIS funding may not cover the scan itself. If the participant is self-managed or plan-managed, we can discuss invoices, travel fees, and billing options clearly before the appointment.

Q: How are results sent to the doctor?
A: Images are reviewed and reported by a qualified radiologist, then the report is sent to the referring GP, specialist, or care team. They'll explain the results and any next steps. Urgent findings are communicated directly to the referrer.
Q: What scans are not suitable for mobile ultrasound?
A: Some scans need clinic equipment, specific positioning, or urgent clinical escalation that isn't safe in a mobile setting. Our team reviews each referral and confirms suitability before we book. If a scan isn't right for mobile, we'll say so and help the referrer point the participant toward the right pathway.
Q: Can a support coordinator book on the participant's behalf?
A: Yes. Support coordinators, plan managers, and care teams can contact us to discuss bookings, clarify suitability, and arrange billing. We'll still need a valid referral from a GP, specialist, or other eligible referrer, but coordinating the appointment itself is something we're happy to do with the support team.
Q: Do you visit supported accommodation, SDA, or SIL homes?
A: Yes. We regularly attend Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), Supported Independent Living (SIL) houses, group homes, and other supported accommodation settings. Tell us the address and any access requirements at the time of booking so we can plan equipment access, parking, and lift use where relevant.

For Patients

Q: Can a support worker or family member stay during the scan?
A: Yes. Support workers, carers, and family members are welcome during the appointment when the participant is comfortable with them being present. Just let us know at the time of booking.
Q: Can you scan someone in a wheelchair or bed?
A: Often, yes. We review the referral and access needs first, then confirm whether the scan is clinically suitable in the participant's available position. Some scans require a specific position or surface. If so, we'll explain that before booking.

Q: What if the participant needs extra time or breaks?
A: Tell us before booking. We plan appointments around communication, sensory, mobility, pain, and timing needs wherever possible. Pausing, breaks, and a slower pace are all part of what we do.
Q: What areas of Brisbane do you cover?
A: We service Greater Brisbane and surrounding regions including the CBD, North, South, East, and West Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Redlands, and selected areas of Moreton Bay, typically within a 50 km radius of the Brisbane CBD. If you're not sure whether we reach your address, contact us at [email protected] or 1300 600 039 and we'll confirm before booking.
Q: Will my carer or support worker be charged for being present?
A: No. Family members, carers, and support workers don't incur any charge for attending the appointment with the participant. Their presence is part of how we make the appointment work, and there's no separate fee for them.
Q: What if the participant is having a difficult day and we need to reschedule?
A: That's OK. Tell us as early as you can and we'll rebook. We understand that the right day to scan isn't always the day a referral lands. Flexibility is part of mobile imaging. The standard same-day cancellation fee can sometimes be waived for participant-related access issues; let us know the circumstances when you call.
