X-rays without the stress of a clinic or hospital trip.

For many people with disability, getting an X-ray is not simple. Transport, transfers, waiting rooms, pain after a fall, sensory overwhelm, unfamiliar environments, and complex mobility needs can all make clinic-based imaging difficult.

Modia Health brings mobile X-ray to homes, supported accommodation, aged care settings, and care environments across Brisbane, so referrers can investigate common concerns without automatically sending the person out.

Planned around comfort, safety, and dignity.

A mobile X-ray should feel calm, practical, and respectful. Our team works with the people who know the participant best, explains each step clearly, and keeps the appointment focused on getting the images needed with as little disruption as possible. Portable X-ray is performed by trained radiography staff following standard radiation-safety procedures.

Support people welcome

Family members, carers, and support workers can stay involved where appropriate.

We plan around wheelchairs, beds, mobility aids, transfer needs, and positioning limits.

A simple referral-to-report process.

Access needs are handled before the appointment, not on the day.

  1. 01

    Send us the referral.

We accept X-ray referrals from eligible healthcare professionals. Support coordinators, carers, and families can contact us if they need help understanding the booking process.

  2. 02

    Tell us about access needs.

Let us know about mobility, transfers, communication, sensory needs, pain, wheelchair use, bed access, or support workers before the appointment.

  3. 03

We bring the X-ray to the participant.

A qualified mobile radiographer attends with portable X-ray equipment and sets up the scan in the safest suitable space.

  4. 04

    Results go to the referrer.

Images are reviewed and reported, then results are sent to the referring GP, specialist, or care team for follow-up.

Clear billing before we visit.

Most Medicare-eligible X-ray examinations can be bulk-billed when referral and Medicare requirements are met. A mobile travel or call-out fee may apply.

Because diagnostic imaging is usually part of the health system, NDIS funding may not cover the X-ray itself. If the participant is self-managed or plan-managed, we can discuss invoices, travel fees, and billing options clearly before the appointment.

For Referring Health Practitioners

Q: Do I need a referral for mobile X-ray?
A: Yes. X-ray is a diagnostic examination and requires a referral from a GP, specialist, nurse practitioner, or other eligible referrer. Support coordinators, carers, and families are welcome to contact us if they need help understanding the booking process.
Q: What types of X-rays can be done at home?
A: Mobile X-ray is best suited to clinically appropriate, non-emergency imaging:

  • Chest for cough, suspected infection, shortness of breath, or referrer-requested monitoring
  • Falls and injury checks for pain, swelling, reduced movement, or suspected fractures
  • Upper limb covering shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, hand
  • Lower limb covering hip, pelvis, knee, ankle, foot
  • Pain or reduced mobility: imaging support when new pain or movement loss is affecting care

Our team will confirm suitability for each referral before booking.

Q: Is mobile X-ray covered by Medicare or NDIS?
A: Most Medicare-eligible X-ray examinations can be bulk-billed when referral requirements are met. A mobile travel or call-out fee may apply.

Diagnostic imaging is generally part of the health system rather than the NDIS, so NDIS funding may not cover the X-ray itself. If the participant is self-managed or plan-managed, we'll discuss invoices, travel fees, and billing options clearly before the appointment.
Q: How quickly are results sent to the doctor?
A: Images are reviewed by a qualified radiologist and the report is typically sent to the referring GP, specialist, or care team within 24–48 hours. Urgent findings are communicated to the referrer directly so follow-up can be arranged quickly.
Q: When is mobile X-ray not suitable?
A: Mobile X-ray is for clinically appropriate, non-emergency imaging. If the participant has severe symptoms, major trauma, sudden deterioration, chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, uncontrolled pain, or needs urgent medical treatment, call emergency services or seek urgent medical care.

Our team reviews each referral before booking. If the requested X-ray isn't suitable for a mobile setting, we'll explain why and help the referrer direct the participant toward the right pathway.
Q: Can a support coordinator book on the participant's behalf?
A: Yes. Support coordinators, plan managers, and care teams can contact us to discuss bookings, clarify clinical suitability, and arrange billing. We'll still need a valid X-ray referral from an eligible referrer, but coordinating the appointment itself is something we're happy to do with the support team.
Q: Do you visit supported accommodation, SDA, or SIL homes?
A: Yes. We regularly attend Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), Supported Independent Living (SIL) houses, group homes, and other supported accommodation settings. Tell us the address and any access notes at the time of booking, such as lifts, parking, and doorway widths for the portable unit, so we can plan a smooth visit.

For Patients

Q: Can a support worker or family member stay during the X-ray?
A: Yes, where appropriate. Family members, carers, and support workers can stay involved during the appointment. We follow standard radiation safety procedures, so the radiographer will let everyone know where to stand or step out briefly during the actual exposure.
Q: Can you X-ray someone in a wheelchair or bed?
A: Often, yes. We plan around wheelchairs, beds, hoists, mobility aids, and transfer limitations wherever it's clinically appropriate. The team will review the referral and access needs before booking and confirm what's possible.
See more FAQs
Q: What if the participant is in pain or cannot move easily?
A: Tell us before booking. Our radiographers are experienced in respectful positioning around pain, reduced mobility, and complex transfer needs. We work carefully with what the participant can tolerate and adjust the approach where possible. If a particular position is essential and isn't safe at home, we'll explain that before booking.
Q: What areas of Brisbane do you cover?
A: We service Greater Brisbane and surrounding regions including the CBD, North, South, East, and West Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Redlands, and selected areas of Moreton Bay, typically within a 50 km radius of the Brisbane CBD. If you're not sure whether we reach your address, contact us at [email protected] or 1300 600 039 and we'll confirm before booking.
Q: Will my carer or support worker be charged for being present?
A: No. Family members, carers, and support workers don't incur any charge for attending the appointment with the participant. Their presence is part of how we make the appointment work, and there's no separate fee for them.
Q: What if the participant is having a difficult day and we need to reschedule?
A: That's OK. Tell us as early as you can and we'll rebook. The right day to X-ray isn't always the day a referral lands. Flexibility is part of mobile imaging. The standard same-day cancellation fee can sometimes be waived for participant-related access issues; let us know the circumstances when you call.
