Mobile X-ray solves the transfer problem.

For patients who can't easily travel, a clinic or hospital trip is more than an inconvenience. It's a transfer, a wait, an ambulance bill, and often a setback in care. Mobile X-ray brings the imaging to them, in calm, familiar surroundings.

Aged care residents

Imaging delivered into residential aged care so residents stay settled, dementia-friendly routines aren't broken, and avoidable transfers don't happen.

In-home patients

Diagnostic X-ray in the patient's own home for people receiving home care, palliative care, or post-discharge support.

Mobility-limited patients

Bedside imaging for patients in wheelchairs, hospital beds, or with transfer limits. We plan around mobility aids and hoist needs.

GPs & care teams

A practical referral pathway for GPs, specialists, aged care RNs, and care coordinators who want imaging answers without sending the patient anywhere.

Common reasons for a mobile X-ray.

Modia Health mobile imaging services bringing diagnostic care to aged care residents

How mobile X-ray works.

A practical referral-to-report process, with access needs and aged care logistics handled before the appointment.

  1. 01

    Send us the referral.

GPs, specialists, nurse practitioners, and aged care RNs can refer. Aged care facilities can set up a standing referral pathway with our team.

  2. 02

    Tell us about access needs.

Mobility, transfers, dementia, pain, wheelchair use, bed access, hoist needs, or support workers. Let us know up front so we can plan the visit.

  3. 03

    A radiographer attends.

A qualified mobile radiographer arrives with portable X-ray equipment and sets up in the most suitable space at the bedside, in the lounge, or in the aged care suite.

  4. 04

    Report sent to the referrer.

Images are reviewed and reported, then results are sent to the referring GP, specialist, or care team, typically within 24–48 hours, faster for urgent findings.

Clear billing before we visit.

For eligible patients with a valid Medicare card, the X-ray examination itself is bulk-billed. DVA billing is available where applicable, and we can also arrange billing through Public Trustee or CAREPACT when relevant.

Because this is a mobile service, a separate call-out fee applies for on-site visits. Current call-out fees are listed on our booking and pricing pages. Aged care facility invoicing is also available when required.

For NDIS participants, billing can work differently, so please refer to our NDIS mobile X-ray page or contact us before booking.

If you are unsure what applies for a particular patient, contact us at [email protected] or call 1300 600 039. We will confirm the billing pathway before the appointment is booked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Search for anything about our mobile healthcare services to find the answers you need.

For Referring Health Practitioners

Q: How do I refer a patient for mobile X-ray in Brisbane?
A: We accept referrals from GPs, specialists, nurse practitioners, and other eligible referrers. Submit via our online referral form, fax to (07) 2140 6038, or email [email protected]. Aged care facility staff and care coordinators are welcome to contact us to set up a standing referral pathway for residents.
Q: How quickly can my aged care or in-home patient be X-rayed?
A: Urgent X-rays are aimed for a 24-hour turnaround. Non-urgent X-rays are typically booked within 4 business days. Reports are delivered to the referrer within 24–48 hours, with urgent findings flagged directly to the referring clinician so care decisions can happen quickly.
Q: Which Brisbane suburbs do you cover for mobile X-ray?
A: We service Greater Brisbane and surrounding regions including the CBD, North, South, East, and West Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Redlands, and selected areas of Moreton Bay, typically within a 50 km radius of the Brisbane CBD. If you have a patient outside our standard service area, contact us at [email protected] or 1300 600 039 and we'll confirm availability.
Q: When is mobile X-ray a better option than sending a patient to hospital?
A: Mobile X-ray suits clinically appropriate, non-emergency imaging where transport is risky, distressing, or unnecessary. For example, post-fall reviews, chest infection monitoring, suspected fracture checks in stable patients, and aged care residents where transfer would cause distress or destabilisation. For severe symptoms, major trauma, suspected stroke, chest pain, or sudden deterioration, ambulance and ED remain the right pathway.

For Patients

Q: What happens during a mobile X-ray appointment at home or in aged care?
A: A qualified mobile radiographer attends with portable X-ray equipment, sets up in the most suitable space (bedroom, lounge room, or aged care suite), positions the patient comfortably, and takes the images. Most appointments take 15–30 minutes. The process is quick, painless, and follows standard radiation-safety procedures.
Q: Is mobile X-ray bulk-billed by Medicare?
A: Most Medicare-eligible X-ray examinations can be bulk-billed when referral and Medicare requirements are met. A mobile travel or call-out fee may apply depending on the location and time. Contact us at 1300 600 039 or [email protected] for a clear quote before booking.
Q: Can you X-ray someone in a wheelchair, hospital bed, or with limited mobility?
A: Yes. Mobile X-ray is designed for patients with mobility limits, transfer challenges, wheelchair use, hoist requirements, or bedside imaging needs. Our radiographers are experienced with respectful positioning around pain, frailty, and complex access. Let us know any specific needs at the time of booking so we can plan the visit properly.
Q: Can a family member, carer, or support worker stay during the X-ray?
A: Yes, where appropriate. Family members, carers, and support workers are welcome to stay involved during the appointment. The radiographer will explain where to stand or step out briefly during the actual exposure, in line with standard radiation-safety procedures.
